The Alpine Home

Designed by Warrick Webber Architecture, the buildings are arranged across the site to take in different aspects of the view and to allow for privacy and shelter. A central outdoor living zone is tucked between the buildings, providing space to enjoy the changing scenery in all seasons.

A COLORSTEEL® Slate Endura alpine tray roof with swage was chosen for the project, due to its hardiness in the often harsh environment as well as its sleek appearance. This is balanced against the rustic look of Corten Steel cladding, boardform concrete and vertical weatherboards of varying widths. Louvred upper windows in the living pavilion counter the vertical lines of the cladding and roofing, and allow for solar gain to be managed in the warmer months.

The project also saw Cal Freeman, of Bruce the Roofer, awarded Runner-Up in the ‘Young Roofer of the Year’ category at the 2019 COLORSTEEL® Awards.

“Cal’s work involved many tricky intersections and design details, as well as the need to integrate COLORSTEEL® with several features constructed from weathering steel. Of particular merit is the attention to detail at the roof penetrations, particularly those welted into the pan of the standing seam profile.” Says, judge Rod Newbold.

The combination of Steve’s design and Cal’s workmanship have resulted in a home that is simple, yet elegant and one that fits with the rugged nature of the surrounding environment.
