Selecting the right product

From the harsh West Coast beaches to the relative shelter of the Waikato farming region; from the sun-drenched climes of Marlborough and the Hawkes Bay to rain-soaked environs like Fiordland, there’s a COLORSTEEL® product fit for virtually every location and every condition. This tool is only intended as a guide. If you are in a special environment (e.g. Geothermal, Coastal etc) or unsure of which environmental category you fall under, please contact us.

Very Severe  ISO Category 5

ISO Category 5 starts 50m from high water on east coast, 100m from high water on west coast is characterised by:

  • Heavy salt deposits 
  • The almost constant smell of salt spray in the air 
  • Close to breaking surf as is found on exposed coasts (typically starts 50 - 100 metres)

This environment may be extended inland by prevailing winds and local conditions

Severe  ISO Category 4

ISO Category 4 characterised by:

  • Light salt deposits 
  • A frequent smell of salt in the air 
  • Typically starts from 100 - 500 metres from breaking surf such as is found on exposed coasts 
  • In the immediate vicinity of large expanses of calm water such as harbour foreshores 

This environment may be extended inland by prevailing winds and local conditions

Moderate  ISO Category 3 & 2

ISO Category 3 characterised by: 

  • Little or no salt deposits 
  • The occasional smell of salt in the air 
  • Typically starts 500 - 1000 metres from breaking surf such as is found on exposed coasts, or in the immediate vicinity of calm salt water such as estuaries 

ISO Category 2 characterised by: 

  • No obvious marine or industrial influences 
  • Typically more than 1000 metres from the exposed coasts or more than 500 metres from industrial emissions
Between 0m – 50m from coastline 

Buildings within 50m of the coastline are often subjected to high concentrations of salt and other containments. For building projects in these environments we suggest you discuss your specific needs with our Technical Manager.
